Life Legacy

Marjorie Doris “Dodie” Ketner-93-of Rockford, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013, in her home, surrounded by her children. She was born February 26, 1920, in Jacksonville, Illinois, to Erma Elliott Johnston and Leonard Edward Johnston. At the age of 12, Dodie began her teaching career as a dance instructor. She graduated from Jacksonville High School and MacMurray College. Dodie married her soul mate, Charles Albert Ketner on October 26, 1941. The couple moved to Mount Sterling, Illinois, where she began teaching school. They also resided in Marine City, Michigan and Polo, Illinois before settling in Rockford. The last 21 years of Dodie’s teaching career were spent at C. Henry Bloom School. Retirement gave her more time to enjoy many activities including the bell choir at church, playing bridge, golfing, knitting, baking and spending time at their cottage in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Dodie will be remembered for giving unconditional love to her family, supporting her children’s various activities and interests and her uncanny ability to remember names and stories of past students. She is survived by her brother, James Johnston, children; Sue Ellen (Al) Orian of Haleiwa, Hawaii, David (Chris) Ketner of Rockford and Sally (Dan) Hogan of Gilbert, Arizona. Grandchildren; Kalikolehua, Keith, Kyle, Kip, Kanoelani, Chad and Sean. 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Charlie, her son, Chuck and her brother, Edward. Dodie’s mantra was “It’ll get worse before it gets better but, it will get better.” Rest in peace Mom, we love you.
