Life Legacy
Gorlyn C. “Gordy” Wermager, age 84, passed away on February 29th, 2016 after a lengthy illness. He was born on April 5th, 1931 in Mabel, Minnesota, the son of Grant and Cleytus Wermager. He graduated from Mabel High School in 1949. In 1950 he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve and received an Honorable Discharge in 1956. Gordy and his wife Betty met while working for the Stouffer Food Corporation and were married on November 12th 1955 in Willoughby Ohio. Upon their arrival to the Rockford area, Gordy began his career in Retail Management in 1962. He was the manager of the W T Grant department store located in the Colonial Village Mall. In 1964 he began working for the Charles V Weise Company. He managed the store located in Freeport, Illinois. In 1966 he was assigned to the brand new Weise store located in the Beloit Plaza. The store name was later changed to Bergner’s and closed in 1992. Gordy then retired after being with Bergner’s for 28 years. During Gordy’s career in Beloit, Wisconsin he dedicated countless hours serving the Beloit community through many organizations. He served on the M & I Board of Directors for over 10 years, the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, the Beloit Jaycees, the Rotary Club of Beloit, Sinnissippi Council of Boy Scouts board, the Stateline United Givers, the Heritage Bank Beloit Mall, the Beloit Plaza Merchant Association and many other organizations. Gordy was a proud member of Christ United Methodist Church. He served on numerous committees and projects supporting the church. He was very proud and honored to be a part of Stephen Ministry caring for others during difficult times. Gordy’s passion was boating and being on the water. He began acquiring wooden Chris Craft boats in 1963 with his best friend Carl Salmons. Together they owned and shared three boats during their lifetime. Gordy took his family on many memorable vacations on Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He also enjoyed a round of golf with his friends and family. Gordy is survived by two sons Greg (Candy) Wermager of Rockford, Jeff (Sheila) Wermager of South Beloit, and one daughter Jill (Bill Cooper) Fagan of Rockford. Five brothers Harold (Ruby) Wermager, Robert Wermager, Lyle (Marylou) Wermager, Scott (Lydia) Wermager, Steve (Julie)Wermager, and one sister Jan (Phil) Cooper. Four grandchildren Garret Wermager , Rachel Wermager, Blake Wermager and Lexi Fagan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty and his parents. Special thanks to Anam Care Assisted Living and their staff for their care and support the past three years. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Alzheimers Association and The American Cancer Society. Visitation Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Christ United Methodist Church, from 4:00 P.M. until 5:30 P.M. and Monday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at 11:00 A.M.
