Biography

Eugene "Gene" Gordon Sjostrom-87-Rockford, died at 1:51 P.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at Provena St. Anne Center. Born February 9, 1924, in Rockford, son of Halvar and Elsie Eurenius Sjostrom. Married to Doris "Dodie" E. Egeland Sjostrom in Rockford on July 28, 1945. Gene was a sales consultant for National Gypsum Co. for 33 years. Charter member and Past President of Alpine Kiwanis Club of Rockford, 65 year member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and proud supporter of the Northwest area Special Olympics. Honored with numerous awards for his community service including the Super Senior award. Avid tennis player and talented artist. A US Army Veteran, he served during WWII and was in the "Battle of the Bulge" operation in Germany. Awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. He attended the University of Colorado. Gene showed concern for others over himself. He was a good listener, a role model and mentor to countless young adults and friends. Survivors include his wife "Dodie" and son Mark of Rockford. Sister, Marion (Glenn) Wicklund of Rockford and grand daughter, Kathy (Antoine) Lavigueur of Newport, RI. and 3 great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brothers, Harold and Robert and his daughter-in-law. Barb Sjostrom. Private family burial at Scandinavian Cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the family for benefit of the Alpine Kiwanis Club of Rockford Endowment fund or others.
